Lincoln School Story Update

3/4/2022

The Lincoln School Story project has been busier than ever! We are happy to announce we will be working with the Ohio Humanities to expand our project. A children's book is in the works by Ohio author Carlotta Penn. We will be doing some changes to our film to include civil rights information and make the film more up-to-date.  We continue to share this story every chance we get and have recently done programs for the Clinton County Historical Society and several businesses.
A book on Highland County Black history is now available through the Highland County Historical Society webpage - www.HChistoricalsociety.weebly.com.

A bench has been dedicated in front of the Highland County Courthouse in honor of the Lincoln School Marchers. A big thank you to Shawn Captain from Hillsboro Against Racism & Discrimination (HARD) for his efforts and Harsha Monument Co./Mayor Justin Harsha for donating the bench. Seen here is 104 year old Miss Elsie Steward Young who is the only living mother who marched.

The Story Continues...

What a year 2020 has been so far!Although we have not been out doing presentations about the Lincoln School, the story continues! We are currently working on a project to collect all kinds of stories of attending Lincoln School, life in Hillsboro during the 1950's, the march, and stories about people who were involved during the fight for integration (ie the lawyers, the court case, teachers at Lincoln). If you have a story that you would like to share, contact us!
We are also researching the settlements and schools that existed prior to Lincoln School, 1869. Settlements like Gist and Hansborough where churches and schools were built.
We are looking for information on an area in Hillsboro referred to as Black Rock and Africa. If you know anything about these areas, please contact us!
Follow us on our Facebook site, Lincoln School Project, Hillsboro, Ohio for more up to date information!

Lincoln Update

The Lincoln Committee has been busy! The Lincoln School Story has been shown in several Cincinnati churches and was well received! Over the holidays, Hillsboro honored the marchers and elected them the Grand Marshalls of the Hillsboro Holiday Parade. The film has been shown to most of the Hillsboro High School history classes with discussions following with the students and some of the women who marched as children. Last weekend, Cincinnati World Cinema included the Lincoln School Story along with the 5 Oscar-nominated documentary shorts in their viewing event at Memorial Hall. Over 700 people attended over the weekend and we could not be happier at the reception this story received! There is also Lincoln exhibit at the Highland County Library in Hillsboro for Black History Month.
